Available 1st October 2019.

This book seeks to portray the true stories of positive, lived experience typical of the majority of real people with Down syndrome and their families. It is brought to you courtesy of #wouldntchangeathing – a parent-led organisation that exists to correct negative, outdated perceptions of the capabilities and quality of life of people with Down syndrome and their families in present day. The pages have been wonderfully arranged with thanks to Stephanie Rodden of Celebrate T21, Australia.

Those negative, outdated perceptions are the fundamental cause of fear-of-the-future that impacts new parents receiving unexpected news of an extra chromosome. It inhibits them from doing what they want to be doing – living in the moment, enjoying the journey and the arrival of the gift of their new baby.
The book includes 61 families and with invaluable support from 56 Photographers, predominantly from across the UK. The book runs from young babies right up to adulthood and in the final pages you are introduced to 4 inspirational adults from across the world.

#wouldntchangeathing (or #wcat for short!) was sparked by the success of the fun World Down Syndrome Day project ‘50 Mums | 50 Kids | 1 Extra Chromosome’ which became an international phenomenon, making national news in over 30 countries. The thousands of messages that poured in describing real, tangible change in those who saw it demonstrated to us that changing the world might actually be possible in the hands of a small group of tenacious parents with effective use of digital tools.

The organisation was founded, and is still run today, by a group of trustees who are passionate about this mission. We now have hundreds of active members making their contribution. All parents. All who feared the future at one time. All now saying they #wouldntchangeathing. So from all of the trustee team, our 450 strong army of parent members and our partners from Celebrate T21, we hope that this book brings you as much joy to read as it brought us to create.“

I have a personal interest in this book as my daughter appears in it. I purchased several books as a gifts. I gave the midwife who delivered my daughter one as a gift and she was so thrilled to receive it as have the other recipients I gifted them to. I wish this book had been available when I received the pre natal diagnosis, it would have made a very worrying time less stressful. It’s a ray of sunshine when all you seem to be told is dark clouds.

This book is beautifully put together in every way….the pictures, the text and the heartfelt reality of having a child with an extra chromosome. Its reality and a big hug in a book to let you know you are not alone and the amazing things you and your child are likely to live and love along the path of life….your amazing life journey.

This book is great for new parents. Reading all the lovely stories celebrating achievements and positive experiences. Knowing that you’re not alone and helping ease those fears.

What a fantastic book. I received one after having a newborn with Down syndrome. It is so reassuring that my little boy is not alone and can achieve his full potential. It is full of stories that celebrate children with Down syndrome. I always have it out on my coffee table for anybody that visits. I’m a teacher and once I’m off maternity I will be ordering an additional copy for our school.

I wish this book was around when my wee man was born. It’s uplifting stories and celebration of life would have assured me in the early days and given me a positive outlook on my son’s future. He can do anything!
